Bully Prevention in Elgin: Helping Kids Build Confidence with Gracie Bullyproof

October is National Bullying Prevention Month—a reminder that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard. For parents, it is also an opportunity to ask: Does my child know what to do when someone repeatedly teases, threatens, or intimidates them?
At Fusion Academy of Martial Arts in Elgin, Illinois, we help children practice those responses through Junior Grapplers, our Gracie Bullyproof® program for ages 7–12. As a Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Center, we teach a structured curriculum developed by Gracie University that brings together verbal assertiveness, physical self-defense, and responsible decision-making.
Bully Prevention Starts with a Plan
“Just ignore it” can leave a child unsure about what to do when the behavior continues. “Fight back” can leave them equally confused about when and how to protect themselves.
Children need adults who listen and take action. They also benefit from practicing clear responses before a stressful situation happens.
That is where bully prevention training can help. Our goal is to give children a plan they can rehearse: recognize harmful behavior, communicate a boundary, seek adult help, and protect themselves if physically attacked. Being targeted is never a child’s fault. Training adds tools and support; adults still have a responsibility to address bullying.
What Children Learn in Junior Grapplers
Junior Grapplers combines age-appropriate jiu-jitsu instruction with opportunities to practice communication and self-control. At Fusion, the program serves children ages 7–12, including beginners with no previous martial arts experience.
The Gracie Bullyproof curriculum emphasizes three connected skills:
- Awareness: Recognizing the difference between friendly play and harmful harassment.
- Verbal assertiveness: Practicing clear boundaries through role-playing, posture, and communication.
- Physical self-defense: Learning defensive, leverage-based techniques that emphasize control rather than punches or kicks.
The curriculum also includes Rules of Engagement to help children understand when self-defense is appropriate and how to respond responsibly. Avoiding fights, involving adults, and using restraint are central to that instruction.
Confidence develops through practice. As children become more familiar with the skills, they have opportunities to experience progress, work with partners, and respond to challenges with support from their instructors.
Charlee’s Story: A Bullyproof Transformation Connected to Fusion
For our academy, this mission has a personal connection.
In the summer of 2021, Charlee Funes began Gracie Bullyproof training after experiencing a physical attack at school. Her story brought her family into contact with Rener Gracie and Fusion’s Gracie Jiu-Jitsu head instructor, Jeff Kim.
Charlee trained at Fusion Academy of Martial Arts, and her journey was documented in the video Charlee’s BJJ Transformation (A Gracie Bullyproof Project). Reporting on her experience described how she returned to school feeling more confident and better prepared to stand up for herself.
Her story shows what support and training can mean to one child. Every child’s experience is different, but the purpose remains the same: help them feel supported while building skills they can carry beyond the mats.

How Parents Can Support Bully Prevention
Start with a calm conversation. Ask whom your child spends time with, whether anyone makes them feel uncomfortable, and which adults they trust at school.
If they describe bullying:
- Listen and thank them for telling you.
- Reassure them that the behavior is not their fault.
- Record what happened and communicate with the school.
- Practice a simple boundary, such as “Stop. I don’t like that.”
- Help them identify where to go and whom to tell for support.
Keep checking in. A child should not have to manage repeated harassment alone.
